Student Responsibilities

  • Find out the name of your advisor from your MyCSC account.
  • Make an appointment to see your faculty advisor.
  • Introduce yourself to your advisor.

Before your advising appointment: 

  • Review the online catalog and review the specific requirements to be completed within your major/endorsement. 
  • Make a list of possible future courses you want to enroll in and write down any questions about courses and your future plans. 

During your appointment, your faculty advisor may ask about: 

  • The current semester and academic progress. 
  • Your life and career plans, academic goals, and areas of interest. 
  • Previous coursework and time frame for completing your degree program. 
  • Preference for course delivery and extracurricular activities.

March is Advising Month! While faculty advisors are available to you throughout the year, March is the perfect time to talk with your advisor about upcoming summer and fall courses.

You and your faculty advisor may decide from a variety of options for enrolling in courses when the registration period opens. These may include: 

Considerations: 

  • Courses that are in high demand will fill up quicker than others. The sooner you register, the more likely you are to secure a seat in the course. 
  • Work with your advisor to adjust your schedule or plans if a course is full or unavailable. Faculty may also help complete a waitlist request. 
  • If you have a double major, endorsements, or a minor, it’s a good idea to visit with an advisor for both degree programs.

Who is my advisor? How do I find out who my advisor is?

Students are assigned a faculty advisor during their first semester at CSC. The faculty advisor will be a member in the same department as your major. If you are undecided, you will be advised by a Student Services’ advisor or Deena Kennell. Students with more than one major may have more than one advisor.

Can I request a different advisor?

Students can request a different advisor by contacting the START Office. 

Where is my advisor located?

Faculty have their own offices on campus, often located in the same building where their courses are scheduled. START Advisors are located in Crites Hall. 

What is the best way to contact my advisor?

Your advisor’s contact information can be found in the CSC Directory. Each faculty has a preferred way to contact, usually listed in their syllabus or Canvas course. If you do not receive an immediate response, it’s a good idea to follow up with a visit to their office or phone call.

What are my advisor’s office hours?

Office hours will be posted outside the faculty’s office door. 

How do I know what grade I'm classified as?

Grade level classifications are based on completed credits.

  • Freshman = 1 – 29 completed credits 
  • Sophomore = 30 – 59 completed credits 
  • Junior = 60 – 89 completed credits 
  • Senior = 90 or more completed credits 
How do I enroll in courses in MyCSC?

To enroll yourself using the Shopping Cart feature, view this Tutorial from the START Office.

How do I drop a class?

Classes can be dropped in MyCSC, similar to how you registered. If your account does not allow you to drop the class through MyCSC, contact START or your advisor for assistance. 

How do I know what classes I have left to take?

Student academic requirements can be found in MyCSC. These requirements are summarized in a section called “Academic Requirements.” These classes are also listed in your degree audit. 

Will my advisor call me?

It is your responsibility to contact your advisor to introduce yourself and make regular appointments to monitor your progress toward graduation. Your advisor may reach out reminding you to register for courses or for reasons related to your academic progress.

What is Essential Studies and why do I have to take those classes?

Essential Studies courses are required for all students at CSC, regardless of major. The Essential Studies Program (ESP) includes a variety of courses from many disciplines. For more information, visit taodengshi.com/esp
